Rundāle Palace is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Latvia.

    Rundāle Palace, built as the summer residence of Ernst Johann Biron, Duke of Courland, is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Latvia. It was built between 1736 and 1740 and 1764-1768.

    The Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed Rundāle Palace and supervised construction work.

    The major part of the interior was made in the period between 1765 and 1768. The unusually elaborate interriors were created by sculptor J.M.Graff and painters Francesco Martini and Carlo Zucchi.

    In the mid-18th century a regular French style garden began to be created around the castle.

    In 2003 Rundale Palace Museum was awarded with the major international Europa Nostra award for outstanding restoration of this cultural monument.
